If You Only Need the Resident Agent Seat

Dependable resident agent service throughout Massachusetts — $99 annually. That fee covers the office address, scanning of legal correspondence, and reminders for state filings.

Massachusetts cityscape

Ownership note up front, because it should change how you read the rest. MA Registered Agent.org publishes this page and sells the $99 service it argues for. The Rocket Lawyer figure comes from their own published pricing, not from anything we worked out.

Their Price Holds at Every Tier

The registered agent line at Rocket Lawyer reads $125 annually, and that number does not shift according to which membership level you hold. In a category built on teaser rates and scheduled step-ups, holding one figure across a whole product line is unusual, and crediting it is more useful than burying it. There is no introductory rate here to expire, which means no unpleasant surprise waiting in month thirteen.

You Are Buying a Legal Platform With an Agent Inside It

The catch is scope, not honesty. Rocket Lawyer sells a legal services subscription: document templates, attorney consultations, filing help, and the agent role sitting inside that arrangement as one component among several. If you draft contracts every month and want a lawyer reachable without an hourly engagement, the money is doing real work.

If what your Massachusetts LLC needs is an in-state street address, somebody present during business hours, and documents in your hands quickly, then you are paying platform economics to use one feature of a platform. That is a scope question every owner answers differently, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sneer.

Our checkout has one item in it. That $99 covers the Massachusetts street address printed on your public filing, same-day imaging of whatever a process server leaves with us, an email alert the moment something arrives, a portal you can open from a phone, and a nudge before your anniversary filing. The only additional charge that exists anywhere in the account is $15 to scan a piece of ordinary business mail, and it is printed here rather than discovered later.

Cheapest in the Commonwealth is a claim we cannot make honestly, because BetterLegal publishes $90. What we will say is that $99 sits among the lowest flat annual rates in Massachusetts, and that it is the same $99 at every renewal after the first.

How the Handover Runs at the Corporations Division

Massachusetts is an expensive place to keep a company. The Certificate of Organization under M.G.L. c. 156C § 12 costs $500 by mail or over the counter and $520 through the electronic and fax channels, where a $20 expedite charge applies whether you asked for expedited handling or not. The annual report repeats those two figures every year the company survives. Against that backdrop, the agent line is one of the few costs an owner genuinely controls, and moving it online costs nothing at all.

The filing itself is a Statement of Change of Resident Agent/Resident Office, a form the Commonwealth declines to number, leaving the full title to do the identifying. Its destination is the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Corporations Division. Filed electronically the fee is $0; by mail or in person it is $25; by fax it is $25 with a further $6 expedite charge. That price holds no matter which company you are moving away from, and no vendor on either side of the table collects any part of it.

The steps, in the order that keeps your record clean:

  1. Enroll with the incoming agent and collect its Massachusetts name and street address.
  2. Complete the Statement of Change with your LLC's registered name and those two details.
  3. File it electronically with the Corporations Division and pay nothing.
  4. Search your entity record and confirm the new agent is showing.
  5. Then, and only then, cancel or downgrade whatever you hold at Rocket Lawyer.

Step five sits last for a reason. The seat is never meant to be empty, and the way owners create a vacancy is by cancelling the old service before the new appointment is on the record. Reverse those two actions and the problem cannot occur.

Worth adding: dropping the agent role and dropping the membership are separate decisions. If the templates and the attorney calls are worth the subscription to you, keep them and move only the agent line. Our change of agent walkthrough covers the form itself.
