What $249 Buys, and What It Does Not

Disclosure first, since everything after it is an argument. MA Registered Agent.org wrote this page and sells a competing service at $99. Nothing said about LegalZoom below is characterization of how they work. It is their published rate and what that rate structurally buys.

The Name Does Real Work

LegalZoom is the one company in this corner of the market that a non-lawyer has actually heard of, and that counts for something. Two decades of advertising bought a level of recognition nobody else in the field carries, and for an owner who wants the safest-sounding option on a form, familiarity is a legitimate reason to buy. We are one of the names you have not heard of, and we are not going to pretend the brand is worthless.

$249 a Year, Renewing Without a Prompt

Registered agent service at LegalZoom is $249 annually. It renews automatically, and a July 2026 look turned up no introductory discount anywhere on the offer. In one respect that is the most honest structure available: the opening year and the fourth year carry the same figure, with no step-up waiting further down the calendar.

It is also the highest flat annual rate we could find for this job in Massachusetts. Set against $99 the gap is $150 every year, and it compounds quietly, because auto-renewal is built specifically not to ask.

Fifteen hundred dollars across a decade, for a role the Commonwealth defines the same way regardless of who fills it.

Massachusetts Grades the Address, Not the Logo

This is the part a brand premium cannot reach. The regulation covering resident agent offices, 950 CMR 112.13, tells you exactly what the state inspects: the office must be a street address, and a post office address does not clear the bar. That is the whole test as far as your public record is concerned. A $249 agent and a $99 agent occupy the same field in the same database, and neither gets faster handling for having a recognizable name.

What you can compare is what happens when a process server walks in. Hire the replacement before signing anything, because the form has to identify an incoming agent and your record should never sit blank between the two.
